The German Orthopaedic Hospital Signs Agreement with GOYS

6th June 2010

Manama - Kingdom of Bahrain, 6 June 2010: A cooperation agreement was signed between the German Orthopaedic Hospital and the General Organisation for Youth and Sports (GOYS), where the Hospital agrees to provide the necessary Orthopaedics medical services and treatments for the players of the national teams in the kingdom. The signing of the agreement was attended by His Excellency Shiekh Fawaz bin Mohammed Alkhalifa, President of GOYS, Mr. Abdullatif Mohammed Janahi, Chairman of the German Orthopaedic Hospital, Prof. Dr. Heinz Roettinger, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ahmed Aljawhary, Hospital Board Member, Mr. Saeed Haji, Hospital Executive Committee Member, and a number of executives from Venture Capital Bank, GOYS and the medical staff of the Hospital. The agreement was signed in the Hospital's premises on the third floor of the Bahrain Medical Complex in Manama.

Dr. Roettinger, welcoming the guests, expressed his pleasure with the success of the Hospital, the level of welcome he and his team have received in Bahrain, focusing in particular on the level of cooperation and support from His Excellency Shk. Fawaz Alkhalifa.

The Hospital was established in Bahrain in the heart of the Middle East after VCBank adopted the idea to develop a fully equipped Hospital complete with expert German staff.

His Excellency Shk. Fawaz Alkhalifa expressed the significance of the agreement in a speech by saying: "This agreement of cooperation and friendship allows GOYS to provide better services for the Bahraini sports by reducing the time, effort and obstacles faced when treating players overseas. Especially those related to travel and booking consultation appointments in hospitals abroad. We have already begun utilizing the services of the Hospital and an internal committee was formed to follow up the treatments administered and the standards applied. We send around 25 players per year to be treated abroad, and we expect to send the same number to be treated this year, only this time it'll be in the German Orthopaedic Hospital."

Mr. Janahi commented by saying: "We are glad to be part of this important medical project. With this agreement, the German Orthopaedic Hospital will be the first choice for the players of the national teams and sports clubs in the kingdom. The Hospital has been fitted with the state of the art equipment and supplies of the highest medical standards. This is the first phase of the project, as we endeavour to make the Hospital the main orthopaedics treatment choice for the Kingdom of Bahrain and neighbouring countries. And as His Excellency Shk. Fawaz Alkhalifa said, the Hospital spares patients unnecessary travel and will help improve the private healthcare offering in the Kingdom. The German Orthopaedic Hospital is a perfect alternative to treatments abroad as it spares costs of both treatments, travel and accommodation that are incurred when seeking treatment in other countries".

He added: "I would like to express my thanks to His Excellency Shk. Fawaz Alkhalifa for his continuing support to make this project a success".

To explain the idea of the German Orthopaedic Hospital project, Dr. Aljawhary, who also holds the position of the Chief Investment Officer of Venture Capital and Business Development at Venture Capital Bank, said: "VCBank established the Hospital in the Bahrain Medical Complex in the heart of Manama to provide a centre of excellence for orthopaedic treatments and rehabilitation with a cadre of specialized surgeons and professionals from Germany. This unique project is part of VCBank's plan to establish a chain of medical centres of excellence for various specialities in the kingdom of Bahrain to attract patients from both Bahrain and the GCC. The German Orthopaedic Hospital bridges a huge gap in the medical services sector by offering first rate orthopaedic treatments and rehabilitation. The Hospital focuses in the first phase on orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine (including physiological diagnosis), and pain treatment. The main medical team is composed of surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses. This team is supervised by Dr. Roettinger, who is a world renounced surgeon and has previously occupied several leading positions in many German hospitals and played a vital role in establishing and running them".

After that, Dr. Roettinger took His Excellency Shk. Fawaz Alkhalifa and representatives from GOYS and VCBank on a tour of the Hospital facilities.

The development of the German Orthopaedic Hospital in Bahrain is a valid alternative to medical tourism that mainly heads west and specially towards Germany. VCBank provided the necessary expertise needed to make such an ambitious project a success, as the team responsible for the project included many local and international specialized technical companies and a German consultancy company specialized in planning and executing medical projects, not to mention the direct contribution in managing the project by Dr. Roettinger and the Mr. Saeed Haji, the Director of Investments at VCBank's Venture Capital and Business Development division.
